Heysham: Jay Morgan 11/10/71 -28/11/17

Living in Morecambe we get to see the sea as often as we like. It was a fine wintery day one weekend when we walked along the promenade towards the charming village of Heysham. In Heysham we always visit St Peter’s Church, with its stunning view across the Bay to Morecambe and climb up to the 8th century ruined chapel on the craggy headland. Here are a row of ancient stone-cut graves that Black Sabbath fans might recognise from the cover of The Best of Black Sabbath.

On this visit families were out strolling, enjoying the stunning view across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District and Barrow and we stopped to watch the waders feeding on the tide line. It is a walk and view I never tire of but on this day I also took the time to stop and read some of the plaques on the memorial benches along the promenade.

As is often the case, one caught my eye. Jay Morgan sadly died in a car accident on Tuesday 28 November 2017 at the age of 46. when his car collided with another on the A6 north of Lancaster. From the newspaper report it is clear Jay Morgan left a loving and grieving family. This memorial bench remembers a dad who was warm, witty and fun to be with. The inclusion of ‘To infinity & beyond,’ Buzz Lightyear’s catch phrase in Toy Story is surely no coincidence and a personal touch. I imagine that watching this film was one of the family’s many shared memories.
